PURPLE DONKEY ORCHID

Description: Plant to 55 cm tall, dorsal sepal to 20 mm long, lateral sepals to 10 cm long. Flowers 1–10, large, showy, uniformly pale mauve to rose–violet with a small yellow blotch on labellum mid-lobe. Dorsal sepal broadly triangular. Petals moderately large and rounded to ovate, sometimes slightly recurved. Lateral sepals very long and parallel to just crossed. Flowers October–December. Distribution & Habitat: Eastern NSW and ACT north to Moonbi, extending from coast to mountains and inland plains. Altitude: 10–800 m. Grows in grassland and grassy woodland and open forest, occasionally in shrubby habitats. Also occurs in Vic. Notes: Widely but very patchily distributed and generally uncommon, with many populations restricted to remnant habitat along rail lines, on roadsides and in small reserves including cemeteries. Known from a single location in ACT. Precise distribution uncertain, with many herbarium records attributed to D. punctata most likely to be other species. Several distinct forms previously included in D. punctata have recently been named and described as separate species. Diuris punctata is most reliably separated from similar species by its tall, robust habit, large flower size and yellow blotch on labellum base.
